I am 27 years old, am married and have two children. My son is aged 6 years and my daughter is 1 year old. I live in the Colchester area. I am not currently working but will consider employment when the children are older.

My son Tom has a diagnosis of ADHD. Tom is under a paediatrician and on medication for the ADHD traits. He has also in the past had some support from a school behaviourist.

Before the incredible years group my concerns were my son’s anger outburst and tantrums. I did have a suitable way to handle the outbursts, and I felt my family bonds were that strong. My main goal was to support and gain strategies to help deal with and improve my son’s behaviour, issues, and needs. I attended the Incredible Years school-aged group session and completed the course with 100 % attendance.

What did I get out of the group? So much I cannot possibly write it all down, but valuable techniques to deal with my children’s behaviour. A better understanding of my child’s behaviour. Belief in myself and that I’m a good parent.”

I think the main benefit was the support and strategies to deal with and improve my son’s behaviour. By the end of the group the bonding/attachment that I felt with my son was greatly improved.

I felt very confident in my ability to manage future behaviour problems in the home. I found the specific parenting techniques learnt on the course as extremely useful specially the child- directed play, the coaching, praise, routines, ignore, positive commands, time out to calm down and logical consequences. The Incredible Years group also helped me with other personal problems not directly related to my son.

I thought the group was amazing! I wish I had attended sooner. The group leaders were both amazing teachers and extremely supportive. I have learnt so many valuable things.

Since attending the group there has been lots of positive changes. My son has improved at home and at school. He is learning to control/understand his emotions and react appropriately rather than aggressively. My youngest models what I am teaching my son and mirrors my praising.

I think this group needs to be more widely available and offered to ALL parents when children start school. I found this so valuable. I really cannot praise my group leaders, or the course, enough.

I would like to say to any parent thinking about attending a group, do not be put off by the course being so many weeks long and the sessions being just over two hours long – it is not long enough! Do the course as soon as you can, it is incredibly valuable, and it really does work. It is all about changing different principles of your parenting to bring about a long-term positive change. I did not think I would enjoy it as much as I did or get out of it as much as I did. A brilliant course.”
