We have 2 children, a boy and a girl, our son was 2 years old when our daughter was born and he has displayed challenging behaviour all of his life, as he was getting older, severe temper tantrums and violent outbursts were becoming more of a problem, especially as many of these behaviours were directed towards his sister.
We had read a variety of books on child behaviour and I had attended a parenting class previously, which was very consequence based. As a result, nothing was really working. In hindsight it is easy to see that we weren’t working as a team, to make matters worse, we had the added pressure of my wife’s cancer diagnosis, which was another emotional challenge for us and the children. The thing that the ministry of parenting course gave us was a way that we could work as a team, using common language and a tool kit we could both use to deal with challenging behaviour. The phrase “drop the rope” is still frequently used in our house.
The group setting was a really constructive way of learning, it was good to know that we were not alone and being able to share experiences and learnings as a group was helpful.
Is our life perfect now? No! But it is immeasurably better thanks to the ministry of parenting.
