We have two girls aged 13 and 11. We both work full time. There have never been any mental health issues with both our families, so we were very concerned by the extreme anger and risky behaviours from our 11-year-old. Tantrums and arguments were frequent.
We requested help via our GP, but no help was offered. Our main goal at the start of the STOP group was to improve our family harmony and learn new strategies for coping and handling situations.
We did not think we would enjoy this course and attended due to desperation rather than anything else. We have absolutely loved going and it has improved the relationship we have with our daughters, helped us to keep matters in perspective, ‘shared the load’ by meeting other parents who are also struggling and given us new strategies and ideas.
We still need to keep working on everything we have been taught! It is a constant learning curve.
We would never have come on this course if it had been self-funded. We heard about it through our eldest daughter’s school and it has been an enormous help and will be beneficial to our whole family. We have already shared hints and tips with other Mums and friends and have been able to maintain a much more positive outlook due to the work done with the Ministry of Parenting
