STOP – A Supportive Programme for Parents of Teenagers

The STOP programme is a step-by-step course for parents with pre-teen or teenagers (10-16 year olds). The course aims to improve family communication through learning how to really listen and de-code what your pre-teen/teenager is really saying or needing.

STOP Programmes

We have been very fortunate for many years to of had received funding to support our weekly STOP groups. Our current funding has come to an end and we have applied for further funding and are hopeful that these programmes will resume soon. However, while we await to hear the outcome of these funding applications we are temporarily unable to accept referrals for our STOP parent  groups.  This page will be updated with details of upcoming groups, locations, and referral information as soon as funding is confirmed.

We have alongside delivering our groups, we have trained professionals in a range of services in the STOP programme.  Our hope is the dissemination of the training will enable more services across the county and country to be equipped to run these groups.

Other local STOP groups:

What is the STOP programme ?

The STOP programme is a step-by-step course for parents with pre-teen or teenagers (10–16-year old’s). The course aims to improve family communication through learning how to really listen and de-code what your pre-teen/teenager is really saying or needing. As your pre-teen/teenager is developing and changing, this course will increase your knowledge on effective behaviour management skills which will help you, as a parent, feel in control yet still sensitively respond to your pre-teen/teenagers psychological, physical and emotional needs. The STOP Programme also gives information on key parental concerns for this age group such as drugs, drink, sexual health and aggression in young people. This course is mindful of parents/carers needs and emotions as well as the teenagers.

Who is it for?
This is a group course for parents and carers of children aged 10-16 years old.  Any adult who has shared responsibility for bringing up a child can attend the group, including step parents, grandparents and childminders. We welcome parents on their own or with their partners/adult family member.

How many sessions?
The STOP course will be delivered over 10 weekly sessions (we do not run in the school holidays)

What is the average size of the course?
Normally about 10-12 parents per course. The course will be delivered within all the Covid-19 government safety guidelines.

Can I bring my child with me?
No, sorry but it would not be a suitable environment for young people/children

What will be expected of me as an individual?
There is an expectation for you to attend all of the sessions where possible and take part in home activities i.e., you may be asked to practice some of the strategies shared on the course. This is to help you fully benefit from the programme.

What is the cost?
The course has been fully sponsored so there is no cost to parents/carers. This course would usually cost £720 per place- Please note we cannot cover travel costs or provide childcare.

Background Shape

‘So supportive, great facilitators. I feel that the sessions impacted on my understanding and knowledge and then the tasks evoked learning which continued at home. Well planned. I gained so much more from the group and other parents than I first thought I would.’
